Happy Thanksgiving

For those not in the States, well, have a great weekend. Blogging will probably be light, unlike the deluge of posts there’s been this week!

A letter probably describing the first Thanksgiving:

You shall understand, that in this little time, that a few of us have been here, we have built seven dwelling-houses, and four for the use of the plantation, and have made preparation for divers others.  We set the last spring some twenty acres of Indian corn, and sowed some six acres of barley and peas, and according to the manner of the Indians, we manured our ground with herrings or rather shads, which we have in great abundance, and take with great ease at our doors.  Our corn did prove well, and God be praised, we had a good increase of Indian corn, and our barley indifferent good, but our peas not worth the gathering, for we feared they were too late sown, they came up very well, and blossomed, but the sun parched them in the blossom.

Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after have a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors; they four in one day killed as much fowl, as with a little help beside, served the company almost a week, at which time amongst other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest King Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed on our governor, and upon the captain, and others.  And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Jesus wept, Female. His post was up for 21 minutes and you accuse me of not remonstrating with him

No, I accuse you because he’s been coming over here regularly lately and abusing myself and others. I’d go so far as to say he’s picking fights. So it wasn’t a 21 minute accusation, more like a couple of weeks. My tolerance level has been reached.

Just because he has been in the Navy doesn’t make him a decent person. If you believe that overgeneralization, then I understand why your blog is a part of a network that lauds misogynism.

It’s been just swell y’all. Adieu.

Oh no, I just get here and one of the founding posters of this little corner is leaving? Don’t do that…As for a black-hole sun, just stay out of his orbit, or his, I believe the term is, Schwarzschild radius. Hey, I always heard the Navy was the most disreputable branch of the services (getting ready to duck now).

As for cred, just, ya know, new kid on the block and all…

Luka: “I will transfer the materials from the old site to wordpress”
    Awesome!

Zogmama: “@Luka/wolfe: Point/Counterpoint? “Jane, you ignorant slut.â€? OK, I’m showing both my age and my total Americanism there….”
Hah! I got it. Yeah, that’s not quite what I seek. Funny, though. I think I’d be willing to go for it if Luka will do “Wolfe, you ignorant (insert appropriate insult here)”. Well, not really, because those outside the US won’t get it…

@Diesel “post something new” — I used your lamest contest ever to post something new!

@Female: “he will of course put them on the internet for all to view? Rather than do the decent thing of keeping them in his private collection” As far as I know he didn’t. He simply told the tale as a cautionary one to warn others. Or do you know something I don’t? Have you been downloading this video?

Moral of this story? You really can’t trust a man to do the decent thing.

Well, you’ve got the right to say that, but it doesn’t make it true. He kept her name private, her country private. Contrast the case of the idiot weatherman who let a girlfriend snap a picture of him naked; she posted it to the internet and he lost his job.

Does that mean all women are scum? Not at all.

You appear to be asserting things that don’t appear to be accurate, and using them to generalize to an entire gender. Please keep in mind this site isn’t the same as Dick’s.

If SotS said that kind of stuff here about women, I’d remonstrate with him. In that sense, you’re no different. Though you’re definitely prettier, and hopefully smell nicer.
    @Z-23 you scare me!
    More to follow.

AllyCWelcome, and thanks so much for uncloaking. I’ve a new post on books, and I shall try to make more. May you continue to delurk; your views are welcome.

    To EVERYONE on SotS.

    @Luka

sots, judging by your posts on this board so far I have come to the conclusion that you are not interested in engaging women here in conversation

I don’t think this is fair or correct. See below.

    @SotS

Luka, how typically female that you would call speaking my opinion an “attack.

Now see that’s just unfair too.

Look: the people who post here are individuals. Beloved by God in my view. (You may be an atheist, that’s fine too, but you know my framework). There’s nothing wrong with saying “I find your post typically female, and here’s WHY”.

But just saying “You’re a typical female” … that’s not discussion, that’s just dismissal.

Similarly, saying “you’re not interested in engaging women in conversation”, that’s not discussion, that’s dismissal.

Luka, you were — and are — invited to post. I value your insights. SotS was also invited to post — by both male and female people here. I value his perspective.

No, neither of those statements embraces some relativistic crap that says “everything’s true” or “everything’s right”. But unless we challenge our own ideas — sometimes harshly — we can’t hope to know the truth.

SotS, if you want to be here, you’re very welcome. Anyone who hits you for spelling errors, not being polished — they can answer to me. Not ‘cuz you can’t take care of yourself, but because this is my house, and you’re an honored guest.

So are the rest of the people here. Gwallan the crazy socialist. Teri the Christian individualist who backs the Dixie Chicks. Wolfe the crazy historian/engineer/capitalist. Zogmama the pacifist physicist. Female, the passionate Aussie. And AllyC, a newly de-lurked person who like sbooks. And Diesel who writes well and is awesome at plugging his blog. And all the others.

All are welcome, all need to be treated as individuals with respect. All are honored guests.

We can have a good conversation here, or we can behave like kids in grade 10. I vote for the former.

Assume the best of those you post against. If you don’t like something Luka says, say WHY. If you don’t like something SotS says, don’t just dismiss him. Not respectful.

    I just love ya, wolfe.
Very good and balanced response to the recent postings.
    *curtsy*

  6. Luka says:

I don’t think my comment was dismissive, it was more an observation, Wolfe. You also ignored my attempt to not be dismissive to sots on later posts, but never mind.

I frankly don’t have the energy to continue with this thread, it is boring.

  7. wolfe says:

@Luka, I’m sorry I missed your intentions. Please, though, you’re a respected fellow blogger, don’t give me that “I don’t have the energy to continue” thing.

That’s a cheesy way of ducking out. You’re cool, not cheesy.

@Teri, thanks. Can I hire you to hit me on the head with a mallet? That would seem easier than some of this… And I respect and welcome all who post here.

Back to a point you made…

I am sickened by pornography of children, or of women or men being demeaned and treated badly. I cannot see any harm, on the other hand, with those men and women who give their consent to have sex on screen - if they are fairly paid and fairly treated. After all, if the people involved get paid fair, the consumers enjoy the material - who are we to judge?

Let’s all agree — porn involving kids is beyond reprehensible on so many levels (can’t give informed consent, messes them up, inappropriate objects of attraction, etc.)

With that as read, let’s look at the rest of your statement.

Let me play Devil’s Advocate here. You’re sickened by porn that involves “women or men being demeaned and treated badly”.

You also say “who give their consent to have sex on screen - if they are fairly paid and fairly treated”.

What if they consent to being demeaned? and are fairly paid?

I see huge lacunae in what you’ve said. Same for most of my co-religionists.

Personally? I don’t watch porn films, but am highly reluctant to judge those that do. I do like looking at pictures of scantily clad women, and I sometimes look at pictures of naked women. And read stories, though pretty mild ones compared to women’s romance novels.

Does that mean I’m sinning and lusting after other women in my heart? Perhaps.

I don’t go to strip clubs unless I can’t reasonably socially (e.g. bachelor party for close friend) avoid it. I don’t like what they do to women. (I’ve been to about 4 such clubs in my life).

  9. Teri says:

I agree that if we are to make the argument that adults who are fairly paid and make the choice should be free to do as they please, onscreen or off. (As long as they don’t do it in the street and scare the horses!)

I do have strong feelings about pornography and its effects on individuals and society (as wolfe well knows) but I also do not feel I am in a position to sit in judgment. I do not judge a man’s (or woman’s) character based on his level of indulgence in viewing pornography any more than I would judge them based on their enjoyment of chocolate cake. But if they were eating chocolate cake all day every day, I think we might be crossing the line into it being a defining point to take notice of!

  10. AllyC says:

Just wanted to say re my post 52 that I was trying to leaven things with a little humor, but now that I see the larger context perhaps what I posted was not appropriate, or maybe so very funny. Mea culpa.

  11. zogmama says:

@AllyC: Schwarzschild radius, eh? I suspect your references may have been esoteric enough to have flown under the radar as it were, though nothing escapes wolfe. I’d liken the referred poster to a Kerr-Newman, anyway, with the resultant dual event horizons. Watch your step, or at least your Boyer-Lindquist coordinates.

  12. wolfe says:

@AllyC re 52, no it was funny, I had drafted a specific response and lost it in a crash of Firefox. Darn Firefox. I agree with 61… mostly.

  13. AllyC says:

Well, one shouldn’t heedlessly disparage the Navy…those sailors’ll get ya! I’m probably glad that Firefox crashed…I do say, though, you seem to wear a lot of hats on this site.

  14. wolfe says:

I wear a lot of hats all the time (literally and metaphorically); haberdashery is a favorite. But I’m not sure I follow what you mean. Can you clarify?
