Woman beaten for refusing to move to back of bus

I thought those days were over. You’ve got to wonder what was going through the head of those men… I mean asking a woman to move to the back of the bus doesn’t exactly have the best track record. Then you beat her for refusing? You’ve got to figure that’s going to play really, really badly in the media.

Where? Why the middle east of course. This time, though, it was Israel:

Miriam Shear says she was traveling to pray at the Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City early on November 24 when a group of ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men attacked her for refusing to move to the back of the Egged No. 2 bus. She is now in touch with several legal advocacy and women’s organizations, and at the same time, waiting for the police to apprehend her attackers.

In her first interview since the incident, Shear says that on the bus three weeks ago, she was slapped, kicked, punched and pushed by a group of men who demanded that she sit in the back of the bus with the other women.

Of course, she may have deliberately provoked this; maybe she’s lying, but a purportedly unrelated (male) witness backs her story. The bus driver doesn’t, though if she’s telling the truth, he’d certainly have motivation to lie since he did nothing to stop the attack on her.

From the sound of it she’s an annoying uppity feminist.

Well, in places where women are being told to move to the back of the bus on public transportation, maybe we unfortunately need a few annoying uppity feminists.

NB- I don’t care if a private religious orthodox bus line wants to segregate by gender, but not if it receives a shekel of public funding. Indeed, if a private bus line wants to refuse to carry women at all, that’s fine with me. (Before any yelp at that, the 3 gyms nearest me are all women-only. I don’t like that, but I support their right to do it).

This just proves that certain religious groups (and religions) are extremely chauvinistic, if not outright misogynistic.

To think physically hurting another person is justified for a place to seat their arse is a joke. Talk about the deluded male ego.

    Long live uppity feminists.

P.S. Can we now have some warm and fuzzy Christmas stories???????

  2. One time I was on a bus that had a chick for a driver, and I was like no freaking way!

  3. AllyC says:

Young Master Troy, It just won’t do to keep on with this obstinacy. Your parents have asked me to convey to you that you must tell everyone where Diesel is this instant, or it’s MILITARY SCHOOL for you, young man. Enough is enough.

  4. AllyC says:

Wolfe-What’s going on at the main site? I see a schism coming: It will soon be the Men are Better Than Women Men and the Better Men are Better Than Women Men. It seems you are being adjudged not ideologically pure enough. The young men grow restive. They don’t want no Dr. King, they’re in a Malcolm mood.

  5. AllyC says:

I don’t know why I put that here-I meant to put it on the open thread…

  6. AllyC says:

I see Troy has been dispatched. Good. That boy was an awful distraction.

  7. Teri says:

    On women being beaten:

What do you say to a woman who has two black eyes? Nothing, she’s already been told twice! ;)

  8. Diesel says:

AllyC - Troy has indeed been vanquished. However, he did make a good point about the bus driver. I mean, no freaking way!

  9. wolfe says:

    @Diesel too true!
@AllyC a very perceptive set of comments. I’ll have more to say in the New Year.
    @Teri ugh… Guess I’m too politically correct…

Where I come from the buses tend to fill from the back. This is sensible as it avoids blockages for passengers boarding. Front? Back? What’s the diff? In this instance Miriam Shear’s objection is to being told where to sit. She created a scene to promote her cause.

In the meantime we have women only this, women only that. Women only cars on Japanese trains. Women only schools. Women only gyms. Women only everything.

These gender specific arrangements are authorised on the basis of what they call “equal opportunity” laws. (The very same laws are used to deny men spaces and to take away those existing spaces men have built themselves - often privately.) When pressed the enablers say that it’s because the presence of men can be a hardship for women.
    DID YOU GET THAT?
The mere presence of a male constitutes a “hardship” for women.

I can gaurantee that if I tried to enter any of those “womens spaces” and was firm about my right to be there I would be forcibly, probably violently, ejected AND arrested. This is “equality”.

Maybe we should clean up our own back yard before we go criticising those of others.

As I’ve said here and elsewhere - beware the backlash. If the innate misandry of western culture doesn’t ease those “young men” - rapidly growing in numbers - could be very troublesome.

For a long time the various men’s “movements” consisted mainly of older men who’d been put through the wringer by a combination of individual women and the system. Nevertheless there was still the ugly stench of chivalry amongst many of them. The younger ones haven’t had these experiences. They have come through a highly charged gender political education system. Their frustration is based on the difference between what they were taught and what they experience.

These young men learn their gender politics in the education system. They have learned, from feminism, that the ends justify the means. And they come to learn, over time, that they were lied to about almost everyting. Anyone who thinks these young men don’t, or won’t, recognise how the system has been tilted against them is being foolish. Anyone who thinks their reactions wont be passionate is equally foolish. The older men have specific targets for their enmity be it feminists, politicians, the family courts etc. The younger men will target the whole world. Indisciminantly. Passionately. And potentially violently if they’re not listened too.

    BEWARE THE BACKLASH.

  12. AllyC says:

@Wolfe-So you would seem to be an anomaly, then, as a younger man with more of an older man’s approach? (Depending on what you mean by “young”).

  13. AllyC says:

The above comment to wolfe is in the context of Gwallan’s comments, which it seems to me he would agree with.

BACKLASH? Are we talking gender-based pogroms?

  14. AllyC says:

I know, the above comment was a little flippant. I do genuinely wonder how “the revolution” would come about though, and I have to say, that if it came in the forms some advocate on MABTW, I don’t think all would be right with the world.

All of this is hard for me to relate to, maybe because I am somewhat older than many here, and also because I don’t see the particular “flavor” on this site manifested in my day-to-day world. Anyway, I want to say more, but I have to go to work now.

  15. gwallan says:

    @AllyC
Are you looking for a response from me or should I allow wolfe to respond on my behalf.

  16. wolfe says:

@AllyC/G I’ll be trying to respond on the new site when I can get some other stuff fixed up… As for age, I’m in my 30’s. Dunno if that’s young. Younger than some, older than others.

  17. AllyC says:

Gwallan-Where do you see the cutoff as far as this generational difference goes? I did not grow up when there was this level of animosity, at least I don’t think there was. I’m not even sure it is present to any great degree now, in my corner of the world.

  18. gwallan says:

    AllyC
I’ll continue this when wolfe deigns to trigger it on the new site.

  19. [...] This is my move of the topic we started discussing here to this site. You are welcome to challenge me (politely) and tell me I’m wrong. That’s fine. All may speak freely here as long as all do so with respect. [...]

  20. wolfe says:

Here’s where I’ve moved the discussion.I grant you, I’ve morphed the parameters (sorry Ally), but not out of malice or ill-will.

Please take up the discussion here.

And yes, being wolfe, an attractive woman in a bikini is involved. Your problem is…?
